Better Dog Spotlight
Strand Design

The original "Good Dog Spotlight" used complex joinery that was difficult to reproduce and we knew that we would have to simplify the way it was assembled to allow for some variation and seasonal movement in the wood pieces.  The second iteration now called "Better Dog Spotlight" uses a steel "spine" and an internal steel "channel" to hold the two halves of the lamp together and house the electrical assembly, as well as a wedge shaped steel shade to hold the wood top to the sides of the form and support the light socket. The use of these locally manufactured steel components decreased assembly time substantially and better allows the wood to move without affecting the lamp's structure.

Working closely with our local manufacturer to make the metal shade we modified the design from a part that was cut, folded and welded to a part that is simply cut and folded. This subtle change provides critical adjustability in the assembly process and greatly decreases the overall cost of the lamp.
