A&DWORKS Chicago, an initiative of the Stamps School of Art & Design at the University of Michigan, is proud to present its second exhibition, “Paper Legends”, at North Branch Projects in Chicago from December 7, 2012 to January 7, 2013. An opening reception will be held on Friday, December 7 from 6:00 to 9:00 pm.

“Paper Legends,” curated by A&D alum Tori Terzakis (BFA, 2008), is an extraordinary collection of works on paper and artist books that share in common an interest in maps and diagrams. The works are extraordinary not only because of surprising forms they take but also because of their wide ranging subject matter, including food, travel, politics, tradition and sound.

The featured artists in Paper Legends are: Cristina De Los Santos, Abby Bennett, Michael Savona, Fereshteh Toosi and Neil Brideau in partnership with Regional Relationship , Ashley Elander, Toby Millman and Zach Abubeker.

North Branch Projects is an independently run project space located in Albany Park, Chicago, IL, that serves as a community bookbinding facility. The space provides an outlet for exploring the creative process in a neighborhood where few resources for the arts exist.

A&DWORKS Chicago is part of a national initiative by the Stamps School of Art & Design at the University of Michigan to support and expand its network of alums and friends around the country. These new collaboratives are designed to generate creative enterprises from within local communities - pop-up performances, residencies, workshops, screenings, exhibits and more. PechaKucha Chicago style is this week - Tuesday December 4th (doors at 6pm, place is hopping by 7:30, and we'll start at 8:20)
What do the winners of the Prentice Future Competition, the managing editor of the Chciago Tribune and a red-headed rock n roll band have in common?
For one, they are all presenters at PechaKucha Night Chicago Volume 24 on Tuesday evening.
If you haven't been to PK in a while, it's time to get back in the habit and join iconic Chicago designer Jordan Mozer, Chicago's loudest band White Mystery, Roche Scholarship recipient Anne Dudek, Tribune Managing Editor Jane Hirt, art and design advocate Tess Landon, young architects Wallo Villacorta and Cyril Marsollier, Dose Market’s April Francis, brand innovator Tom Marquardt, molder of minds Sandi Dumich and 2014 AIA Chicago Board member Juan Moreno.

No snow yet, but if it's the first December in Chicago then at least there's a guaranteed PechaKucha Night. Loads of fun and festivity for all family members (over the age of 21).
Our presenters are ready to chit-chat for 400 seconds while you guzzle egg nog and snuggle round the open fire (aka Martyrs' stage).

It'll be so much fun, and you'll certainly learn something you didn't know before.
Come and open your presents early at Martyrs' - Tuesday, December 4th at 8pm (but get there a bit early for conversation and libations).

PechaKucha Night was devised in Tokyo in February 2003 as an event for young designers to meet, network, and show their work in public.
It has turned into a massive celebration, with events happening in hundreds of cities around the world, inspiring creatives worldwide. Drawing its name from the Japanese term for the sound of "chit chat", it rests on a presentation format that is based on a simple idea: 20 images x 20 seconds. It's a format that makes presentations concise, and keeps things moving at a rapid pace.

The world is getting only more complex. Entire industries are undergoing seismic transformations wrought by technology, global economics forces and a host of cultural factors. Designers are becoming central to addressing the large, ambiguous problems of our time. Whether the arena is health care, economic development, learning or public policy, design methods are helping solve seemingly impossible problems.

So, why design? You are invited to the Institute of Design (ID), to learn about the methods and frameworks we teach, talk one-on-one with faculty, students and alumni, and find out how design makes a difference.

Come learn about our Master’s and PhD degree programs (http://bit.ly/PDddd8), executive education programs (http://bit.ly/PTXXu8), and faculty and student research (http://bit.ly/PDdZqG), as well as the divergent community of graduate students from around the world that you can be a part of.

Program:

William Skelton and Jamie Munger, MDes/MBA ’12, will discuss conducting fieldwork in Haiti to help them conceive economic opportunities for the rural poor.

Guillermo Krovblit, MDes/MBA ’11, co-founder of Peapod Labs (http://bit.ly/QWk66m), connects parents and kids through learning with award-winning educational apps. “Peapod Labs is an unlikely meeting of minds and hearts that just might, unsuspectingly, become leaders in media literacy for preschoolers." - Wired.com (http://bit.ly/N4saF0)

Lauren Braun, a second-year student, will share her experiences as an intern at McDonalds and MAYA and talk about school projects done with the City of Chicago and WBEZ Radio.

RSVP to design@id.iit.edu or call ID Graduate Admissions at (312) 595-4900. Feel free to share this invitation with anyone you know who may be interested in design. Everyone is welcome. Refreshments will be served.

TIME and MATERIALS

A group exhibition featuring new work by
Bridgette Buckley Studio
Manifold
and Merkled Studio
with
site specific installation and artwork by
James Jankowiak

Show Duration: July 13 - October 5, 2012
OPENING RECEPTION: Friday July 13, 6 - 9pm

CHICAGO, IL: MANIFOLD is pleased to present its upcoming group exhibition, TIME and MATERIALS, opening Friday July 13th, 2012 with a reception open to the public from 6 to 9pm, located in the gallery at 4426 N Ravenswood Ave. This exhibition will run through October 5th. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Friday 12 to 6pm and Saturday 12 to 4pm.

Drawing from the traditional use of the term among craftspeople as a quantifiable measure for projects with uncertain outcomes, TIME and MATERIALS is a point of departure and a guiding principal for the works of art and design in this group exhibition.

Chicago furniture designer Bridgette Buckley departs from developing furniture and lighting for production in order to embrace craft and explore the relationships people establish with inanimate objects. Structures of fabric playing against wood are transformed and illuminated by the intimate contexts of people interacting with them.

Through painstaking effort and humble materials, artist James Jankowiak creates a site specific installation, further delving into his fascination with mutation through repetition. This work, along with his paintings, questions the primacy of foreground to background, architecture to object, contrast to dissolution.

From the metal workshop and design studio adjoining the gallery, Manifold puts forth a new series of tables and a bench. The contrast between the crisp edges of steel, the soft textures of wood, and the delicacy of brass wire focuses attention on furniture as form beyond function.

Designer and fabricator, Kari Merkl of Merkled Studio, presents the latest iterations in her furniture line. These pieces strike a refined balance between technology and hand-craft with inventive combinations of precision fabricated steel, leather, and hand-dyed felt.

IBM’s 100th anniversary as a corporation, marked in 2011, offered an opportunity to reflect on the core ideas that have defined the company from its birth to the present day. The company’s evolution from a small business making scales, time clocks and tabulating machines to a globally integrated enterprise with more than 400,000 employees, a distinctive culture and a strong vision for the future is a tale of big bets, lessons learned and discoveries that have transformed the way we all work and live.

Telling that story required a process of research, curation, design, writing and publication carried out by multiple teams. The result: 100 iconic moments when IBM and IBMers have contributed to the science of information, the reinvention of the modern corporation and new ways in which the world literally works.
